Horizon: Zero Dawn – E3 Showing

Horizon: Zero Dawn is the latest IP from developer Guerrilla Games, creators of the Killzone series, and is an open world action role-playing game set in a futuristic yet medieval world overrun with machine-like creatures. It’s also become one of the top games I have been talking about since its first reveal at E3 last year. During this year’s E3, Guerrilla Games showed a brand new demo of the game and what we can expect from the final product. The main protagonist, Aloy, is seen sneaking across a field hunting the machine creatures to scavenge parts. She scans the area to see what is around her, and a menu will pop up for each beast to see what components she can get from it. The components can be later used to create explosives and other various items.

The main showcased weapon was Aloy’s crossbow and what players are capable of doing with the variety of bombs available. You’re also able to tame the beasts that you fight and can use them to help you in future battles. Some can also be used as mounts to ride through the wilderness. While the place looks deserted, the environments still have a lot of detailed beauty crafted into them. The demo closes with Aloy using her crossbow to pin down one of the bigger machine beasts and killing it off. I’m very interested in seeing what combinations are available for the upgrade system and how they’ll play out later in the game.

The gameplay in Horizon: Zero Dawn is very reminiscent of games like The Witcher, Skyrim, and Mass Effect and even the likes of Infamous and Ratchet and Clank in terms of the parkour and weapon variety/combinations that you will be able to use. The main mystery behind the game is how the story will play out. What are these mechanized beasts? How will the branching dialogue change the course of the game? What other weapon variations will be available? Should I get the absolutely badass looking collector’s edition? As with any game being showcased at E3 I’m always weary about the final product. However, if things keep looking as amazing as they are now, this could be one of the biggest releases in 2017. Horizon: Zero Dawn is definitely a game to keep an eye on and hopefully we will learn more about it before its release on February 28, 2017.
